Peeling back the darkness of M87

SUPERCOMPUTERS at The University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) enabled researchers to confirm the accuracy, and interpret features of, the first-of-its-kind image of a black hole obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope. Relativistic simulations of black hole physics, along with ray tracing, helped predict how M87 would appear on Earth, and gave the Event Horizon team confidence that the composite image was correct.
