Durians belong to the genus Durio zibethinus , also locally known as “King of Fruits”. Many people from Southeast Asia like Malaysians love to eat durian.
Even with the husk intact, the notorious fruit has such a potent stench from meters away. Some people love the smell as well as the taste of the fruit. Some people associate the smell of the fruit as garbage, rotting meat, and even some describe it as gym socks. But a fundamental question remains as to why durian smells so[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ] bad?
Using genetic studies, a group of researchers found that durians have essentially amplified “smelly gene,” which contributes to the production of sulphur related chemicals. With multiple copies of the gene, durian essentially had the capacity to focus a lot of its attention on becoming as stinky as it wanted.
