Why do crab walk sideways?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

STRANGELY enough, there is absolutely nothing wrong with crabs moving sideways.
In fact, crabs walk sideways for the same reason humans walk forward! Crabs have their legs situated underneath their bodies, with their knees bending outward. Intrinsically, crabs walk sideways because their legs are positioned in such a way.

If crabs were to walk forward or backward, they would[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ] trip over their own legs. There are also some crab species that are known to walk frontways, for example, the spider crab, Libinia emarginata, soldier crab, Mictyris platycheles and raninid crab, Lyreidus tridentatus.

Most crabs can use their front pair of legs, which are primarily used for defence and grasping food, to move forward. This, however, do not allow them to move quickly.

Hence, crabs move sideways since it is most efficient for them to do so. In a parallel universe, do crabs also wonder why humans walk frontways?
