The A, B, AB and O are the four most common blood groups. Meanwhile, Bombay blood is the rarest blood group. This type of rare blood type is found only in the world at 0.0004 percent of the population. Only one person in [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ] 10,000 people in India have Bombay Blood Type. It is also called hh blood type or Rare ABO blood group whereby it has no h antigen on the red blood cells. H antigen is the precursor of the ABO blood group antigens. It occurs due to a mutation in the H gene that produces H antigen on RBCs. This blood phenotype was first discovered by Doctor YM Bhende in 1952. People who carry this rare blood type can accept blood only from another Bombay blood type individual, and not from anyone who is O, A, B or AB type. However, they can donate blood to others. Bombay Blood groups occur due to inbreeding and close community marriages and shared common ancestry among the people of India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. [/ihc-hide-content]
