A PRAWN which can make a sound louder than a jet engine has been found in British waters, the pistol shrimp.
The creatures’ also known as snapping shrimps, are native to the warmer waters of the Mediterranean and have only been found swimming off the coast of Britain a handful of times this century. Despite being less than an inch long, the creatures can emit an astonishing 218 decibels, which is louder than a gunshot.
Biologists believed that the sound they produce is from a cavitation bubble, not the claw itself, created the snapping shrimp’s snap and this is the only explanation for such sound.
