Factors that determine food choice

Have you ever wondered what is your relationship with food? Why do you choose the food you choose to eat? Let’s explore what the determinants of your food choice are! Because there are numerous factors other than nutrient needs that influence which food you choose to eat and the dietary patterns you adopt. Read on to discover these factors.

Availability. The foods available to an individual or a population are affected by geography. In many parts of the world, the diet is limited to foods produced locally. Those countries that can transport, store, and process food allow year-round access to seasonal foods and foods grown at different locations.

Socioeconomics factors such as income, living conditions, and lifestyle affect the types and amount of foods chosen. Family living on limited incomes are restricted in their food choices.

Health Concerns also affects the choice of food. People with food allergies, digestive disorders, and dental problems are limited in the foods they can consider for consumption. People consuming special diets for disease conditions are also limited to foods that meet their dietary intake. The perceptions of what makes a healthy diet affect their food and nutrition choices. For example, individuals may choose low-fat foods if they believe that these choices will help them lose weight and prevent diseases.

Emotional Condition. Food may also be an expression and moderator of moods and emotional states. Some people eat more when they are upset, while others eat less. Most people tend to choose starchy and sweet food when they are stress because, to them, these food are associated with comfort, love, and security.

Personal and Cultural Preferences. Individual palates determine what is consumed, and tradition, religion, and culture may dictate what foods are considered appropriate. Personal preferences for taste, smell, appearance, and texture strongly influence which foods people select. Not wanting to give up the foods they like is why people give for not choosing a healthier diet. Personal belief also affects food choices. A vegetarian will not select a meal that includes animal products. Food preferences are among the oldest and most entrenched features of every culture. Asian may consider rice as the focus of the meal, whereas Westerners may include pasta with every meal.

Social Acceptance. During any social events, food always becomes the focus, and food choices determine social acceptance. For example, for an adolescent, stopping for a burger after school can be the basis for acceptance by one’s peers.

Which factor influence you the most? Knowing the factors that influence your food choices can better help you make a conscious choice. The food that we choose must supply essential nutrients to our body and provide energy for us.

FOOD IS FUEL. That’s the relationship between food and us. In the right proportions to prevent deficiencies, promote health and protect against chronic diseases. Our choices will make up a dietary pattern that is either healthy or not so healthy.
