THE Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) recently launched the “Science and Technology Foresight Malaysia 2050” gearing up to the changing landscape with the advent of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and a number of other emerging technologies.
The Foresight focuses on five main areas, namely biotechnology, digital technology, green technology, nanotechnology and neurotechnology. The Foresight provides [ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ] a narrative to Malaysia’s journey towards a harmonious, prosperous and sustainable nation in 2050.
This is based on nine key drivers – Green and sustainable practices; People and values; Leadership and governance; STI capacity and competency; Economic growth and equitable wealth distribution; Urbanisation and rise of megacities; Talent; Population and Demographics; and Education and Training.
The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau in launching the Foresight said the fourth Industrial Revolution requires the right talent and the workforce of 2050 must be nurtured, engaged and deployed effectively.
“When the Generation Z, the post-millennial and generation alpha enter the workforce, their workplace will be a common place for spatial cognition, robotics and artificial intelligence,” said Madius. President of ASM, Prof Datuk Dr Asma Ismail presented the narrative of the Foresight and described the roadmap prepared by ASM as a living document where ideas will evolve over time.
Asma, in her keynote speech briefly explained the Trends and Attribute Map that summarises the Foresight. The map has details on megatrends that will have significant impact on political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental scenes globally; aspirations and projections according to the key drivers; threats in achieving the country’s aspiration; technologies that will act as enablers; policies that allow aspirations to be achieved; and government initiatives and projects that are in line with the aspirations stated in the Foresight.
The Foresight also identified 95 emerging technologies relevant to Malaysia’s advancement towards 2050 with 21 impactful technologies that should be prioritised. The Foresight is a culmination of expert views brought together through the Malaysian Foresight Alliance where experts and think tanks from various fields such as science and technology, economy and finance, society and culture, and geopolitics and governance envisioned the state of the nation in 2050.
