CROCODILES are large reptiles that are prevalent in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. Crocodiles are carnivorous creatures and would feast on fish, birds, and large mammals such as cows, buffaloes or horses.
They possess a lethal combination of strong jaw pressure and sharp teeth to crush and kill their prey.[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ]
Despite their fearsome reputation, crocodiles can’t chew their food. Their jaws are designed to move sideways. Hence, they are unable to grind food down in an orthodox fashion. Furthermore, crocodiles’ teeth are not aligned for chewing but are designed to grab and hold onto their prey.
Crocodiles tend to overcome this adversity by tearing and swallowing their food. For larger preys, crocodiles pull their unsuspecting victims into the water and drown them. A method known as the ‘Death roll’ is then employed by the crocodiles to dismember their catch. This is performed by biting and then convulsing or spinning wildly till bite-sized chunks are torn off their victims.
