Poison dart frogs are the members of the Dendrobatidae family. They wear some of the most brilliant and beautiful colours on Earth. Depending on individual habitats, their colouring can be yellow, gold, copper, red, green, blue, or black, which extends from the tropical forests of Costa Rica to Brazil.
Most poison dart frogs are the size of an[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ] adult humans thumbnail, about half an inch to one inch long. Although these type of frogs are tiny, some are deadly poisonous. These beautiful frogs have a very special slime on their skin that contains the potentially lethal toxins that they are named for. If a predator licks the skin the result is certain death. The frog’s skin contains 200 micrograms of this poison.
As little as two micrograms of the poison can kill a human being. The bright colours of the frogs give warning to predators of their toxic lethal poison. These colourful dwellers of rainforests and other warm moist climates are called poison dart frogs or poison arrow frogs because South American Indians use the potent toxin secreted from granular skin glands on the back of some frogs to poison darts used for hunting.
These darts would be placed on the frogs back without harming it and the tips of the darts would be covered in the poison. Poison from one dart would instantly kill a hunted animal.
