Sabah Steps Up Climate Action with Dedicated Council and Funding
The Sabah government is taking decisive steps to combat climate change through the establishment of the Sabah Climate Action Council (SCAC) and targeted funding for environmental initiatives.
Chaired by the State Secretary, the SCAC is responsible for setting strategic direction and coordinating mitigation and adaptation projects across the state. Recognising the pivotal role of forests in managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, a dedicated Climate Change Unit has been created within the Sabah Forestry Department to serve as the council’s interim secretariat.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the state has allocated RM3 million annually to support the Climate Change Unit in executing its initiatives.
“For 2024, the unit is focusing on two key areas: compiling a comprehensive GHG inventory and conducting a study on climate change impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation strategies in Sabah,” Hajiji said.
These are urgent priorities that will form the backbone of Sabah’s climate change policy and potential carbon trading framework. They will also help determine the viability of future carbon-related projects in the state.”
Formed in 2022, the SCAC continues to play a central role in steering Sabah’s response to climate change, ensuring cohesive action across all relevant sectors.
