Sarawak is taking bold steps to position itself as a regional hub for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, by turning palm oil waste into biofuel on a large scale.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s existing network of 85 palm oil mills presents an opportunity to streamline waste collection and channel it to a central processing facility.
He made these remarks at a press conference following the launch of the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority’s (Salcra) new kernel crushing plant in Lubok Antu, Sri Aman.
“With proper coordination, these mills can work together to manage palm oil waste efficiently and transform it into value-added by-products such as biofuel,” he said.
Abang Johari emphasised that biofuel derived from palm waste could serve as the base feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel, a growing market in the global energy transition.
“If we can realise this, Sarawak has the potential to become a producer of SAF for the region—boosting not just green energy efforts, but also our revenue,” he added.
