How much of our brain do we really use?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Do we only use 10% of our brains? A survey indicated nearly 65 percent of Americans believe that humans use only 10% of their brain and it is also a favourite pseudoscience in movies, where human beings only use 10% of their brain and if they awaken the remaining part of their brain then they are capable of displaying extraordinary abilities.

However, this is more science fiction than facts. Recently, researchers used a brain imaging technique referred to as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure activity in the brain while a person is performing different tasks. They discovered that most parts of the brain are active throughout the day even if a person is performing a very simple action and that also includes when a person is resting or sleeping. The percentage of the brain in use at any given time varies from person to person and it also depends on what a person is doing or thinking about. Nevertheless, people still believe that Albert Einstein gained high intelligence due to being able to use more than 10 percent of his brain. It is a myth as even minor brain damage can lead to detrimental effects which are impossible if we had 90% spare capacity.[/ihc-hide-content]
