Chronic Inflammation – Tapping into the Power of Turmeric

Reading Time: 2 minutes

BY JOYCE WONG JIN YI

MILLIONS of people suffer from chronic pain caused by inflammation, while millions more suffer from diseases caused by chronic inflammation, such as cancer and heart disease. Short-term inflammation can protect the body, but chronic inflammation can have serious consequences. Chronic inflammation accompanying ageing is a driver of every health-related disease, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, kidney disease and cancer.

Prescription drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticoids target only part of the overall chronic inflammatory response. But, they have substantial side effects and can not use in the long term. Low-grade chronic inflammation can be threatening to your health without you realizing it. In this article, let me share with you the disease prevention remedy that is as close as your kitchen shelf to help you to combat chronic inflammation.

Turmeric is the golden spice that has long been used in Indian cuisine. It makes all sorts of food appear more appetizing and taste delicious. Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Many of its health benefits come from using turmeric’s rhizome, an abundant source of polyphenols called curcuminoids. It possesses several pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-allergic, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antioxidant, and anti-tumour properties.

Natural turmeric powder has low bioavailability that does not get absorbed by the intestines. Researchers have found a way to improve adsorption by adding natural turmeric oils. With the added absorption enhancers, we can all experience the many health benefits of curcumin when taking it as a supplement.

Curcumin makes up less than 10% of dried turmeric and belongs to a family of health-promoting compounds called curcuminoids. Curcumin is probably the most bioactive and health-promoting curcuminoid found in turmeric. Curcumin has been studied in over 7000 published scientific articles and is known to modulate several critical pathways, including the inflammatory processes. It is excellent to learn that curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory properties without all of the side effects of common drugs.

Remarkably, curcumin can reduce inflammation by modulating the activity of the following pathways. They Inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which transforms arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2. Curcumin also inhibits the LOX enzyme, which converts arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory compounds called leukotrienes.

Nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) is a protein complex associated with chronic inflammation that damages tissues. In several studies, curcumin has been shown to inhibit NF-kB signalling and reduce the production of compounds that incite inflammation. Besides that, curcumin inhibits markers of inflammation (Interleukin-6 and High Sensitivity -C Reactive Protein), which can help reduce low-grade chronic inflammation.

At the same time, curcumin exerts potent antioxidant activity that can scavenge the superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Curcumin helps shield us from oxidative damage by reducing lipid peroxidation, early steps in the inflammation cascade by inhibiting transcription of cell surface receptors for oxidized LDL cholesterol. It also helps bolster natural antioxidant enzymes and compounds. Curcumin protects against both oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. These benefits add up.
