Reading Time: < 1 minute

CAN’T stop thinking about that bag of potato chips all day? Chocolate bar? Doughnuts? So why do we crave for the food we crave? What is the science behind food cravings?

More often than not, food cravings are associated with one’s desire and emotional needs. For instance, carb cravings arise when we are stressed or anxious. Carbohydrates are known to increase the level of serotonin, which has a calming effect and instantaneously make us feel better.[ihc-hide-content ihc_mb_type=”show” ihc_mb_who=”2,3,5″ ihc_mb_template=”1″ ]

In addition, studies showed that combination of fat and sugar may exert calming effect too. Besides that, food cravings are also thought to be vital messages sent by our body that something is lacking. This may include dehydration (lack of water) or nutrient deficiencies (lack of essential nutrients ).

Hence, instead of feasting on fatty or sugary food that you are craving for, try opting for healthier food. Remember, you are not at the mercy of your food desires!
