The Green Pontiff: Pope Francis and his legacy of environmental justice

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a world fraying at the seams – from environmental collapse to social inequality – the late Pope Francis emerged as a prophetic voice with Laudato Si’, his landmark 2015 encyclical on care for our common home. With the gentleness of Saint Francis of Assisi and the moral clarity of a global shepherd, he called the world to conversion—ecological, spiritual, and communal.

Laudato Si’ was not merely a theological document. It was a wake-up call. It urged us to hear both the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” recognizing that environmental degradation and human suffering are deeply intertwined. Through the encyclical, Pope Francis affirmed that climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, and pollution are not just scientific issues – they are moral ones.

With deep reverence for creation, he invited humanity to rediscover a sense of awe and gratitude for the natural world. He denounced the “throwaway culture” and the illusion of limitless growth that fuels exploitation and consumerism. He challenged world leaders, corporations, and individuals to adopt a new ethic – one rooted in solidarity, simplicity, and stewardship.

Pope Francis did not write in abstraction. He drew upon the wisdom of scientists, indigenous peoples, theologians, and ordinary people. He embraced an integral ecology that unites environmental, economic, social, and cultural dimensions. His words reached beyond Catholic walls, resonating with people of all faiths and none, forging common ground in the shared responsibility of protecting the Earth.

More than a document, Laudato Si’ became a movement. It inspired action in parishes, schools, and communities. It gave rise to the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, mobilizing faith-based environmental efforts around the globe. It changed how the Church speaks about the planet – not as a resource to be dominated, but as a sacred trust to be cherished.

In Pope Francis, the world has found a pontiff who walks with the planet. His papacy reminds us that to follow Christ means to care not only for souls, but for soil, sea, and sky—for all God’s creatures, great and small.

As the climate crisis deepens and future generations inherit the consequences of inaction, the legacy of Laudato Si’ will endure as both a warning and a way forward. It challenges us to live differently, to consume less, and to love more.

Pope Francis taught us that creation is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be honored. May we heed his call—not just with words, but with lives rooted in justice, compassion, and care for all that lives and breathes.
